Businesses need strategy that drives and guides your and your team’s decision making, while increasing alignment and efficiencies to be successful.
In a world without strategy, your team is likely creating tactical output – whether it’s 70-page PowerPoint decks, tools with lots of bar and pie charts, or assortment analysis … you get it!
We talk a lot in today’s category management world about the sexy stuff like shopper insights, big data, and storytelling – but the reality is that a surprising number of individuals lack a basic understanding of the foundations of category management and may also struggle to differentiate between data, fun facts, and true insights.
CMKG’s online Retail & CPG Skills Assessment, gives us evidence of limited category management foundational understanding. For example, in topics like Category Management Overview, Category Roles, and Category Definition and Segmentation, the average scores are much lower than you might expect. Of note, our online assessment test has become a huge motivator for individuals to identify their learning gaps in a non-invasive or scary way — read more about the assessment below.
As a manager, strategy is also most likely a part of your responsibilities, including the development of well-defined category management strategies, processes, and guidelines that create internal alignment and connect what individuals do in their work with your overall strategies. And this ultimately helps you achieve the overall goals and objectives for your team and makes decision-making much easier for everyone.
There are many different components that help to build strategy (some may be controlled by you, others may not), including:
As a manager, there may be an opportunity to refresh and articulate your overall category management strategies and goals to align with overall organizational goals (both short- and long-term). According to Forbes, only 65% of organizations have an agreed-upon strategy, 14% of employees understand the organization’s strategy, and less than 10% of all organizations successfully execute the strategy.
Here are some ways to improve your current strategies:
Strategic thinking is about being able to plan for the future and because our industry is always rapidly changing, it’s critical for you and your team to keep up with all of the changes going on. We recently ran a skill-building webinar on Identifying Trends which focused on the key drivers changing our environment, identifying some megatrends that are having a profound impact on our business and the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.
This newsletter is dedicated to strategy and I hope I have given you some tools to help you move towards a more strategic place.
Part of developing strategy is staying in the loop with what’s going on in the industry, the changing shopper, new trends, etc. Make sure you take the time to stay relevant, improve your business acumen, and make better decisions. Share articles with your manager, discuss relevant ones with your peers, and challenge yourself to always be learning!
Check out our most popular posts in the past 6 months (we’ve also developed a tool I’ll share later on in the newsletter with all our favorite learning resources)!
From Nielsen: Here's some great information from Nielsen's Total Consumer Report 2019. The numbers they share are valuable in understanding how much consumers trust and rely on technology in today's era of digital fingerprints and personalized advice, trusting that their data will not be misused.
From Supermarket News: Wow, how many retailers have had to close on their grand opening day because of thousands of people waiting outside to get in and a 3-hour wait to find a parking spot? I thought shopping at Costco here was stressful on a busy day... I won't complain so much.
From Nielsen: Here's a great read about store types and numbers and size in 2018 vs 2017. Includes some important trends you should know.
From Nielsen: Here's a great category overview of Cannabis from Nielsen. They are anticipating cannabis will become a $40 billion category in the next 5 years (5X growth). How many categories do you see having that kind of growth potential?
From Supermarket News: Here's a good article on some of the comparisons between Amazon and Walmart sales results and what is helping them to grow.
From Progressive Grocer: Check out this "gem" from Progressive Grocer. Packed with loads of great insights into what's most important in Grocery in the upcoming years. THIS IS A MUST READ!
Another great reading resource is my thought leadership blog. One of my favorite topics is strategy. Check out some strategy-related posts that I think you'll find interesting. Feel free to share the ones that you like the best with your peers, team, or social network.
You can also check out ALL blog topics (over 70 blogs now).
I compiled our online courses available that relate to strategy and that will help you to become more strategic in your approach. Individuals and teams can access training through our online training and resource center (readytolearn.cmkg.org) and can purchase courses individually or part of a corporate training package. Webinars are accessible with training purchases or separately as a Premium Category Management Learning Member.
In order to contribute strategically to your business, you need to take time to build your skills, reflect on the issues, and ponder options. This means sometimes you also need to look at ways to improve your efficiencies, freeing up time to move to a more strategic approach. The quest to build your strategic skills can be uncomfortable to start – but once you begin applying these new skills, you’ll find yourself contributing at a higher level.
